Meet the New York City Board
I am a 16-year-old senior at Hunter College High School in Manhattan. I started this magazine because having grown up in a trilingual household and having pursued Spanish in school, language has truly shaped my understanding of my own culture and of others’ cultures. Having lived in the Bronx all of my life, I wanted my peers living in the outer boroughs to have a platform to write expressively and freely. Outside of magazine writing and language learning, I am involved in STEM extracurriculars, Indian classical dance, and scuba diving/underwater photography!
I’m a 17-year-old senior from Queens. Periphery interested me because people never really talk about how diverse New York is. Everything gets lumped into broad categories like “Asian” or “Hispanic” when really there’s so much nuance regarding nationality, community, and culture. I’m from a neighborhood where people speak everything from Farsi to Aymara. Some people work on Wall Street, others in the shop beneath their apartment. I think seeing everyone’s different experiences side by side, as well as how they work together, is important. I care about communicating, which is why I like learning languages in my free time and watching multilingual movies!
I am a 17-year-old senior from the Bronx and currently attend the High School of American Studies. I feel that it is crucial for everyone’s voices to be heard which sparked my interest in being a part of this magazine. I like learning languages and have studied Spanish, Japanese, and French. I love to travel and have an interest in journalism. I also enjoy running cross country and track on my school teams.
I am a 17-year-old rising senior at Dominican Academy in Manhattan. I live in the Bronx, and I joined this magazine because I want to amplify my peers’ voices during this culminating time. There is a lack of representation of young voices from the outer boroughs of NYC, but an abundance of intelligent high school students who have the power to make positive change in our city. Besides being part of this magazine, I am a dancer and musical theatre performer!
ARTS AND LAYOUT EDITOR
I’m from Washington Heights and I’m a senior at Hunter College High School. I wanted to be a part of this magazine because of the importance of self-expression, especially for communities that exist outside of the dominant narrative of the arts. I’ve studied extensively in the fine arts and I have a passion for both visual art and writing because of their ability to facilitate both discussion and healing. I’m currently learning Portuguese and I enjoy tutoring and cooking in my free time!
ARTS AND LAYOUT EDITOR
I am a 17-year-old senior attending Hunter College High School in Manhattan. I live in Queens, and wanted to join this magazine because of the importance that lies within representation. Given opportunities, students can rise to a platform to express themselves and their stories through mediums of their own choosing. Besides taking part in this magazine, I have a deep passion for art and storytelling, and I hope to release a comic in the future. I also love to play volleyball and swim, and am a part of my school's varsity swim team.
